Sightlines into several rooms generate happiness

A consistent characteristic of homes people love allow a person to stand in one room and look into several other rooms. Architects Kelly Mitchell and Sean Garman create homes that are composed beautifully architecturally and have characteristics that make people happy. In this home, one can stand in one room and see into and through several other rooms or can even stand in the courtyard and look through several rooms of the house. One finds an intimacy of each defined space and an openness and connection with nature and related rooms.

Dallas, part of TED conversation

The TED conference has increasingly emphasized cities in their talks and conversations. TED 2018 speakers include: Vishaan Chakrabarti, the Dallas Festival of Ideas keynote speaker a few years back who said Dallas should not be tamed; Ian Firth, who has designed many of the world’s most amazing bridges emphasizing elegance and beauty; Renzo Piano, the architect who designed the natural light-filled Nasher in Dallas; Ingrid Fetell Lee, a speaker I am hosting whose book The Aesthetics of Joy is coming out this year; and in addition there is a Target private dinner discussing design’s role in the city’s greater good, in conjunction with the public art project, the Mile Long Opera. At TED, whether it is housing, autonomous vehicles, education, criminal justice, technology, health, or art, these topics increasingly relate to cities, a primary interest of many attending TED. My badge invites those here to ask me about HQ2=Trinity Groves, cities. While the competing cities’ pitch for Amazon HQ2 might homogenize the attributes of these various cities, in my opinion this search highlights the differences in the cities. Dallas is open and innovative which will allow individual Amazon employees to make an impact on the city. Dallas is dynamic, so it will be able to make a positive impact on the Amazon employees.

Courtyard contains and expands space

Courtyards define a contained exterior space and can also extend interior space. In this home designed by Architects Kelly Mitchell and Sean Garman of Mitchell Garman Architects, the gardens surrounding the home become visually linked with the courtyard garden and pool, by the house that has many glazed walls, windows and glass doors that allow one to stand in the home and look outside in every direction, or stand outside and look through the home to see the surrounding landscape. Sight lines have created a series of visual planes of interior and exterior spaces that are intriguing and enticing. This balance and blending of nature and structure creates a modern home that one lives in with great pleasure.

Path of Urban Home

The perception of a downtown home only 25 blocks from an art district is one of grit, concrete, and density. In Dallas, our downtown neighborhoods might have front porches, landscaped boulevards, over 100-year-old live oak trees, flowering gardens and Koi ponds. A clear view of the skyline backs up the ribbon of green space traversing the neighborhood of homes layered with mature trees, ornamental trees, and blooming flowers.

Homes can be playful

I remember as a child my parents almost bought a home because of the charming playhouse on the property. The playhouse posted here also generated great delight with the buyers, even when the main attraction was the architecturally significant house on Swiss Avenue, the brick guest quarters and the stone house for the pool equipment. Homes can generate happiness in so many ways!

Gardens integrate land and home

Gardens draw people from inside the home and connect them to the land. The architectural landscape creates outside rooms that flow with the interior rooms, creating a home that makes homeowners happy.

A Red Oak as Big as Texas

An arborist said this red oak tree on the property of this White Rock Lake home was as old as Texas and one of the largest in the state. Few trees can anchor a 4-acre estate lawn like this red oak tree does. Margaret Hunt Hill kept this tree groomed and nurtured for years for her brother. The subsequent owners have taken the same care.

Architecture and Azaleas

Architect Frank Welch designed this #ArchitecturallySignificant townhouse in the 1970s with the oversized soft Mexican continuous brick walls #TexasModern architect O’Neil Ford made famous in his work. The framework of this powerful architecture is softened by the interior open air walkway, the interior courtyard and rear courtyard with a layered canopy of towering and ornamental trees. Azaleas announce a delicacy and sensitivity that is also conveyed in the architectural work of Frank Welch on Travis by a branch of Turtle Creek in the Turtle Creek Corridor.
