Analogue Intimacy

Memory or mystery—transistor radios, mechanical rolodexes, princess dial phones, 1950s yellow, mid-century modern living, or confusing mechanical contraptions? Paul Sokal with beautiful enlarged photographs revisits an analogue era that empowered the individual without losing the intimacy of interactions. Even the physicality of dialing on a fixed phone and one having to move to a fixed phone to answer or miss the call connotes a more purposed connection.

Still Life Instills Action

Paul Sokal’s photographs at PDNB Gallery are either a nostalgic reminder of a personal and more intimate era of play and personal communication, or a look at a great unknown of the past depending on when you were born. What is known is when strong photographs are in a delightful space, even still lifes prompt action. This Design District gallery is too small to say the crowd went wild, but one could say the work animated those in attendance. Photographer Paul Sokal, also known for his dramatic cityscapes, is in the background.

Autumn Reserve

Search for fall this wet season in Dallas is even a tougher search than finding good modern homes among the hundreds of builder production homes. A visit to the Urban Reserve neighborhood yields both 50 architect designed homes and a touch of fall color in the natural landscape of Urban Reserve designed by landscape architect Kevin Sloan.

Sleek Historicity

This casual photograph illustrates how a historic home can inspire finishes that convey the architectural aesthetic of the house and still be sleek, handcrafted, and lush. Architects Ted Larson and Paul Pedigo designed this newel post that was then crafted in the shop of contractor Randy Clowdus. The wide plank floors and ceilings are another example that reflect the era and convey 21st century refinement. The Venetian plaster finish also draws from tradition and current design.

Dusk, Damp, Dallas

Dallas is a city associated with sunshine, smiles, and optimism. The historic rains this fall have transformed the city into one of contemplative and melancholy vignettes. Well into autumn, a green, moist landscape still prevails. It is not the weather people move to Dallas for, but it gives the friendly, frenetic nature of the city a respite. Nature itself becomes the dominant theme.

A Doctor in the House

When I think of UT Southwestern and the Dallas medical community, I think of Nobel Laureates and doctor bands. Here Dr. Buz Burkhead fronts the esteemed Doctor Doctor Band at Hotel ZaZa. I looked for the great architect and music aficionado @SeanGarman in the audience. Alas, Sean must have broken his perfect streak of seeing dynamic rock and roll bands every night for what seemed like two straight weeks. Fortunately, Sean will still be able to find this music under the Broken Bone label. Buz Burkhead also lives in a fabulous home designed in the mid-century by architect Robert Johnson Perry.

Slotted Sun

An important part of Texas Modern Architecture is orienting the home to accommodate the environment. Porches capturing breezes and shielding the sun have been a long-honored tradition from the early pioneer homes that inspired the original Texas Modernist architect David Williams and architect O’Neil Ford. Here is the detail of the slatted brise soleil over the side porch. A slatted porch roof will shield the sun and provide light. This slatted roof is angled so that in the summer when the sun is moving directly overhead, the streaks of light are narrow. In the winter, when the sun is welcome, sunlight fully streams through the slats, on through the glass walls, and across the vast expanse of composite concrete tile floors. It is details like this that when searched for provide a sense of discovery when the origins of the home’s joy become apparent.
