Needles and Glass

Sharp blue spruce needles look fluffy and inviting until one ventures a hand into the tree. Glass in shards connotes danger, but hand-blown in beautiful colors and shapes brings joy. Christmas trees provide visual interest and emotional intensity.

Ornament Collage

An eclectic tree with bountiful shapes, colors, and lights create a mosaic of collages. From each subtle angle, the compositions evolve. A new vignette takes shape. From a distance, a Christmas tree looks like a still life painting. Up close, a Christmas tree takes on more of the attributes of a sculpture, lava lamp, or kaleidoscope. The deeper one looks into a tree the more joy one finds.

Solstice Sun

Just as the leaves have fallen, and views of nature dim, the solstice sun saves the day. When the sun is at its lowest, sweeping across the horizon, its sunlight animates the interior of a modern home like this one designed by architect Joshua Nimmo. The pattern of sunlight and shadow amuses us and accentuates this lovely season.

Penguin and Spurs

As winter approaches: Artist David McManaway had a wonderful way of interpreting life. What better way of defining winter in Texas than depicting penguins and spurs. Dallas really does have some icy cold winter weather, and Texas really does have spurs. I don’t think of this small piece as an artistic juxtaposition, more of an illumination. Kirk Hopper opening of Roger Winter curated show of David and his friends found object art Jan.19th. #PenguinAndSpurs #Winter #Holiday #Artist #Art #DavidMcManaway #Gift #Texas #Spur #Penguin #Design #Fun #JoySpotting #Dallas #TremontStreetArtist
Architectural Composition

Much is said about Dallas not having views of mountains or oceans. Less is said about the views that Dallas has including the architectural composition of modern homes seen from a Joshua Nimmo designed home in Urban Reserve. This dynamic modern mosaic of homes is framed by the modern home designed by architect Scott Marek in the foreground, and the modern home designed by architect Thad Reeves in the distance. The angle design of the modern home by Vincent Snyder punctuates this backdrop of architect-designed homes.

Star Architecture Acclimation

Some have criticized Dallas as insecure and as a result infatuated with star architecture. Philip Johnson’s Mercantile National Bank skyscraper that he designed in 1987 certainly fits the description of star architecture. It is a 60-story, postmodern style building, still the second tallest in Dallas, designed by a star architect in the modern style of the moment. After 30 years of what originally pushed the momentum of Dallas forward with a strong architectural statement, has now just become mundanity on Main Street. It is a comfortable and sentimental sight. It is so much better than if a lesser architect had designed the building and left a monstrosity on Main Street.

Tremont Artists

The best openings are Dan Rizzie openings. The opening at @BarryWhistlerGallery was filled with energy and good will that my friend and artist Dan Rizzie is known for generating. His paintings sold briskly as the patrons of Dan reflected on their Dan Rizzie collection and stories. Dan is known as a Dallas artist, some might remember him featured as a Dewar’s Doer. Long Island now claims him, but first and foremost I will always associate him with the Tremont Artists. There has never been a monograph or book on the Tremont Artists, but there should be. The number of artists who were developing their work in the 1970s on Tremont that have gone on to national success and their work owned by museums across the country is quite incredible. Those artists who either lived on Tremont or spent the night on Tremont as a regular guest or lived around the corner include artist Dan Rizzie, David Bates, James Surls, John Alexander, David McManaway, Jim Love, Roy Fridge, Linnea Glatt, Barbara Bell, Sam Gummelt, and Mike McNamara. The artists who lived around the corner include Frances Bagley on Victor Street, Randy Brodnax on Junius Street, Patricia Forest on Worth Street, Doug MacWithey on Lower Swiss. Other artists on Tremont include costume designer Giva Taylor and actor T.A. Taylor.
In addition, it was on Tremont when the DW Gallery was conceived. This was the first Dallas Gallery dedicated to women artists. It helped propel the career of successful artists like Suzy Phillips, Linda Surls, and invited male artists like David Bates and David McManaway when they had a group show. Congratulations to the ongoing success of Dan Rizzie and all of the Tremont Artists.

Winter Sun Warms

On a cold winter day it is nice to have a home oriented and the trellis angled to allow the low winter sun to permeate the interior space, raking across the floors, climbing up the walls, and bouncing off the ceiling. Architect Joshua Nimmo designed the home to shield the sun in the summer and accentuate the sun in the winter.

Dallas Colors

Buildings have architectural fingerprints of their era. Downtown buildings also often have the colors of the era. Brownstone was dominant in the early 20th century. The 1970s gold reflective glass of the twin towers on Central Expressway foreshadowed the glitz of the 1980s. Architect Philip Johnson chose pink granite for Momentum Place in 1987. Mid century colors on prominent downtown buildings remind us of an era when Dallas was emerging as a nationally known city with optimistic plans for the future. Fifty years of success gives Dallas greater credibility and more vulnerability to big city entitlement. The opening of the AIA Dallas Chapter AD EX returns an architectural focus to what was once, in the mid century, the architectural epicenter of Dallas. #architecture #architect #dallas #downtown #midcentury #midcenturyskyscraper #modern

Japanese Maple Chorus

In Dallas we rely on a chorus of Japanese maples to fill the sky or at least the garden with autumn red. These understory trees with their showy and brilliant reds steal the show from the towering pecans and other large canopy trees in Munger Place. How much nicer to have this underlayer of color across the backyard than the cold, drab gray of concrete for ADU parking or a backyard rental house itself. Happy Thanksgiving!
